Who is your dream customer? This should be the first thing you ask yourself when starting your new business, and it should be in the forefront of your mind when carrying out pretty much any social or marketing related activity. 

Your product is not your business, your service is not your business, your customer is your business. So you should get to know who they are, right?

I like to think of them as your DREAM customers, because at the end of the day, you're going to be spending the rest of your business life with these people. You wouldn't want to share your whole life with someone you dislike right? So start thinking about who these people are, and aim all of your business, social and marketing activity towards them. 

"How??", I hear you ask? This is where the dream customer template comes in. A typical activity for any new small business is to create a "customer persona". This is a research-based profile that helps define a target customer. Without one, it's almost impossible to fully communicate your business, its services and products.

With the following download, you'll be able to give yourself a clear idea on:​

  • Key demographics of your customer - rough age, income, location, gender

  • Where they hang out - which social sites do they use? What do they watch on TV?

  • What sort of personality do they have? Are they organised/disorganised? Are they creative or analytical?

  • What problems they have? Which problems could you be helping them solve?

It might feel like a strange, story-telling, activity - i.e. giving them a name, an image and an entire personality. But once you have this created, PRINT IT OUT and put it right in front of wherever you work - your desk, your "making" station, your fridge - keep it visible, and you'll be amazed at how much it can keep you focused and on the right path with all of your business activities.
